My needlessly sentimental attachments....
Time for an update on those English football clubs you occasionally watch out for in the lower Division tables (tucked away in the results pages between the school boys' rugby results and the first round scores from the Bahrain Tennis Open).
I'm sure we all have our own faves (a motley collection of teams in the top flight many years ago, or those who once put up glorious performances in an FA Cup semi), but just for the heck of it, I've put together an update on mine. Its a pretty short list now that Birmingham, Fullham, Bolton and Pompey are doing reasonably well in the top flight.
West Ham: Hovering around 4/5 position in the First Division and with a chance to play for promotion to the premiership. Go Hammers!
Crystal Palace: Same deal as the Hammers, although one suspects that if promoted they may just pick up where Wolves left off in this year's Premiership.
QPR: QPR celebrate their triumphant return to Div 1 next season. Perhaps another 5 years and we'll see them in the Premiership again. I won't go so far as to say 'pigs might fly', but it might be an accurate summation of their chances to say that there's about an equal chance of Les Ferdinand pulling on the blue and white hoops again and trotting out onto the pitch at Loftus Road...
Sheff Wednesday: 16th in Div 2 and looking a long way from anything resembling promotion. I'll always hope for a Sheffield Derby in the Premiership in my life time.
A new dimension to this sideline spectator sport will be added next year when we all get to delight in the sinking of Leeds down the Div 1 table (if they make it through the summer!)
